Description: The Geographic Names layer contains information about the natural, physical and some cultural features in Connecticut. This is the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's repository for geographic feature names information and includes bars, bays, beaches, channels, cliffs, falls, flats, gaps, hills, hill ranges, islands, lakes, ledges, points, populated places, reefs, ridges, rivers, rocks, swamps, towns, and valleys. It does not include structures and facilities such as airports, bridges, cemeteries, churches, highways, hospitals, parks, railroads, roads, schools, towers, or universities. This Geographic Names layer is based on some information from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), published by the U.S. Geological Survey, and from spatial data and hard copy maps compiled by the State of Connecticut, Department of Environmental Protection. The layer is comprised of point features with information in related data tables that hold the unique identification number, name, short name, alternate name and type of each geographically named feature. This layer describes the location of each geographically named feature by state and by Connecticut town (municipality). Map label points do not represent true locations for these features. Specifically, map label points are cartographically placed near and not directly on the feature they label. Data is compiled at 1:24,000 scale.

Description: Geographic Places is a point feature-based layer that includes cultural features such as airports, bridges, government buildings, hospitals, railroad stations and schools. The layer is based on information from lists from various sources available during 2008. The layer represents conditions at a particular point in time. The layer includes public and private airports, major bridges, the State Capitol, acute care hospitals and medical centers, railroad stations serving three major railroad companies and most public and some private educational institutions in the categories of elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities. It does not include other types of schools such as kindergartens or business schools, a complete set of bridges or government buildings other than the State Capitol. Features are point locations that represent the approximate center location of the feature as seen on the Connecticut 2004 Orthophotographs. The layer was created for the purpose of labeling geographic places on maps and is not intended to be a complete list of any of the categories included in the layer.

This layer only includes information for Connecticut. Polygon features depict the geographic areas for individual towns (municipalities). A town may be represented by more than one polygon feature. For example, in addition to representing the portion of a town on the mainland, a polygon feature may also define an island along the coast of Long Island Sound.

Description: Waterbodies are 1:24,000 scale feature based layers that includes all waterbodies and hydrography features depicted on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps for the State of Connecticut.
Named Waterboides includes all named waterbodies. All Waterbodies includes all waterboides. Hydrography inludes all hydorgraphy features including waterbodies, inundation areas, marshes, dams, aqueducts, canals, ditches, shorelines, tidal flats, shoals, rocks, channels, and islands.
Description: Named Waterbody is a 1:24,000-scale, polygon and line feature-based layer that includes all named waterbodies depicted on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps for Connecticut. This layer only includes features located in Connecticut. Named Waterbody features include water, dams, flow connectors, aqueducts, canals, ditches, shorelines, and islands. The layer does not include the marsh areas, tidal flats, rocks, shoals, or channels typically shown on USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps. However, the layer includes linear (flow) connector features that fill in gaps between river and stream features where water passes through marshes or underground through pipelines and tunnels. Note that connectors represent general pathways and do not represent the exact location or orientation of actual underground pipelines, tunnels, aqueducts, etc. The Named Waterbody layer is comprised of polygon and line features. Polygon features represent areas of water for rivers, streams, brooks, reservoirs, lakes, ponds, bays, coves, and harbors. Polygon features also depict related information such as dams and islands. Line features represent single-line rivers and streams, flow connectors, aqueducts, canals, and ditches. Line features also enclose all polygon features in the form of shorelines, dams, and closure lines separating adjacent water features. The Named Waterbody layer is based on information from USGS topographic quadrangle maps published between 1969 and 1984 so it does not depict conditions at any one particular point in time. Also, the layer does not reflect recent changes with the course of streams or location of shorelines impacted by natural events or changes in development since the time the USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps were published. Attribute information is comprised of codes to identify waterbody features by type, cartographically represent (symbolize) waterbody features on a map, select waterbodies appropriate to display at different map scales, identify individual waterbodies on a map by name, and describe waterbody feature area and length. The names assigned to individual waterbodies are based on information published on the USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps or other state and local maps. The Named Waterbody layer does not include bathymetric, stream gradient, water flow, water quality, or biological habitat information.
